Taranaki Retreat is a community suicide prevention/postvention support charity that operates with a trauma-informed approach. Our trained, supervised peer-support team (enabled by clinical and non-clinical staff) support approximately 1,000 whānau each year addressing suicidal ideation and inter-generational patterns and protecting and supporting children and young people.
The Retreat offers a comprehensive kete of outreach and residential supports through its paid and volunteer staff. People can stay at our beautiful community sanctuary – free of charge — when times are tough; engaging with our kaumātua/whānau leader, social work staff and grief specialist. Guests benefit from creative work with power-tools in our Building Mates Programme, arts therapy, life coaching and grief support groups. Long-term programmes address self-harm and poor coping strategies and facilitate relationship support – building towards a stronger future and restoring hope.
