For over 35 years, the Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits & Education Centre (TOPEC) has provided people of all ages with tailored, immersive outdoor experiences and a deep connection with te taiao. From river safety to mountain skills, TOPEC has empowered generations of children, youth, and adults with life-changing opportunities in the outdoors.

The Need

With its facilities now at capacity, TOPEC faces growing demand. To continue delivering transformational outdoor education and leadership experiences, the centre needs upgraded facilities that can support more learners, offer enhanced programmes, and remain a cornerstone of outdoor learning in the region.

The Solution

In 2024, NP Partners, with the support of New Plymouth District Council (NPDC), committed to working alongside TOPEC to redevelop the centre. Central to this vision is the construction of a new community lodge – a space designed to welcome more people, enhance learning opportunities, and strengthen TOPEC’s ability to provide immersive outdoor experiences for decades to come.

Fundraising

The total fundraising target for the project was $1.7 million.

The TOPEC Lodge project has been a true community endeavour, made possible through the commitment of donors, supporters, advocates and funders from across Taranaki. New Plymouth District Council and NP Partners, Toi Foundation, NZCT, TOPEC, Taranaki Foundation, The George Mason Charitable Trust and the Barnett Family have all played a part in bringing this vision to life.

With the lodge build now fully funded, fundraising will continue for the fit-out and wider landscaping and site development.
