For over 35 years, the Taranaki Outdoor Pursuits & Education Centre (TOPEC) has provided people of all ages with tailored, immersive outdoor experiences and a deep connection with te taiao. From river safety to mountain skills, TOPEC has empowered generations of children, youth, and adults with life-changing opportunities in the outdoors.
With strong community backing and the project now halfway funded, TOPEC is preparing for its next chapter.
The Need
With its facilities now at capacity, TOPEC faces growing demand. To continue delivering transformational outdoor education and leadership experiences, the centre needs upgraded facilities that can support more learners, offer enhanced programmes, and remain a cornerstone of outdoor learning in the region.
The Solution
In 2024, NP Partners, with the support of New Plymouth District Council (NPDC), committed to working alongside TOPEC to redevelop the centre. Central to this vision is the construction of a new community lodge – a space designed to welcome more people, enhance learning opportunities, and strengthen TOPEC’s ability to provide immersive outdoor experiences for decades to come.

Fundraising
The total fundraising target for the project is $1.7 million.
Thanks to contributions from philanthropic trusts, businesses, and individuals, including a lead gift of over $100,000 from the Barnett Family, the project is now halfway funded.
With $300,000 left to raise, private and corporate donors have the opportunity to help complete this transformational community facility. Naming rights opportunities are available for key spaces within the new lodge, providing a chance to leave a lasting legacy in the Taranaki community.
