Taranaki Foundation introduces The Fergusson Fund Media Scholarship, in partnership with The Taranaki Daily News.

This scholarship fund was set up in retirement by Glen Fergusson, a former Chief Photographer of Taranaki Newspapers who passed away in November 2022 at the age of 85.  Glen’s legacy lives on through this fund, established to support Taranaki students pursuing studies in journalism, photography, or communications.

Josh Hickford, Chief Executive of the Taranaki Foundation, says “After completing year 12 at New Plymouth Boys High, Glen began his career journey as an office junior before making his mark at the Taranaki Herald for 10 years. He returned to Taranaki Newspapers as Chief Photographer, a role he cherished until his retirement in 1997, describing it as the ‘best job in the world.'”

With no children of his own, Glen sought to leave a lasting legacy to his community through the Taranaki Foundation. The simplicity and effectiveness of the foundation’s approach resonated with Glen, inspiring him to establish a fund that would endure beyond his lifetime.

“Glen believed there are many deserving students who could benefit from a helping hand to further their education and life skills,” added Josh.

The Fergusson Fund Media Scholarship is valued at $10,000 annually, awarded to one student and includes up to three weeks at The Taranaki Daily News for hands-on experience and mentorship. Eligible candidates must be enrolled or planning to enrol full-time in a journalism, photography, or media-related course.

Applications for the annual scholarship open on September 1st and close on October 31st. The selection process will involve collaboration between The Taranaki Daily News and The Taranaki Foundation, with announcements made by the end of November.

“We are delighted to partner with Taranaki Foundation to celebrate Glen Fergusson’s lasting impact,” commented Matt Rilkoff, Editor, at Taranaki Daily News. “This scholarship not only supports academic achievement but also honours Glen’s dedication to our local media community.”
