About the Massey Trust
After the devastating fire in 1989 which destroyed key parts of the campus, including the Library, Commerce, and Arts Wing, a group of individuals – Thelma Luxton, Les Armfield, Graeme Orr, Colin Payne, Peter Budden, Jennifer Mace, Diane Watts and Harry Cast – came together to launch a fundraising appeal and generous contributions from former pupils and other supporters addressed urgent needs. The surplus funds were then invested to meet the future needs of the school.

Established in February 1996, the Massey Trust was created with Thelma Luxton, Les Armfield, Eileen Gundesen, Kinsley Sampson, Graeme Orr, Terry Wells, and Harry Cast serving as the first Trustees of the Massey Trust.
Named in honour of Mr. Massey, the school’s first principal, the Trust has providing annual support for our school community.
In 2024, the Trust established a partnership with the Taranaki Foundation to further strengthen and expand its impact.
The Massey Trust Fund is now managed by the Taranaki Foundation. Donations are invested permanently, with the capital preserved indefinitely. Each year, the income generated from these investments supports various charitable purposes for Waitara High School students.
