George Mason Charitable Trust Fund
In February 2025, the George Mason Charitable Trust (GMCT) transferred $2 million to the Taranaki Foundation, establishing a named fund to perpetuate Dr. George Mason’s enduring legacy. This ensures his philanthropic vision thrives for generations to come, with the Taranaki Foundation safeguarding and administering the funds according to the Trust’s original intentions.
Dr. George Mason (1930-2024), a dedicated scientist, conservationist, and educator, established the GMCT in 1995. Driven by a desire to support education and postgraduate research, particularly in the natural history of Taranaki, the Trust generously distributed royalties from his business. Over decades, millions of dollars in funding created invaluable study and research opportunities for young New Zealanders and bolstered environmental protection efforts.
The transfer to the Taranaki Foundation, facilitated by GMCT trustees Elise Smith, Brian Milestone, and Barry Upson, guarantees the continued distribution of $85,000 annually to 26 designated beneficiaries. Grants, ranging from $450 to $16,500, will continue to support the causes Dr. Mason cared about.
By partnering with the Taranaki Foundation, the George Mason Charitable Trust Fund is secured in perpetuity. This ensures that even 50 years from now, the beneficiaries who were so important to George will receive financial support, and his impactful vision will continue.
