Taranaki Foundation is proud to announce Libby Delehanty as the first-ever recipient of the Fergusson Fund Media Scholarship. This award, established in memory of the late Glen Fergusson, aims to support students pursuing careers in journalism, photography, and communications.

Libby, 18, a former student of Sacred Heart Girls College New Plymouth has just completed her first year studying a Bachelor of Communications at the University of Canterbury and is excited about gaining more journalism experience in the coming years.

Raised on a small dairy farm in South Taranaki among a family of seven, Libby has always worked hard to cover her education costs. “With four other siblings, I never expected my parents to be able to help with university fees,” she says. “That’s why I’ve worked extremely hard during term and summer holidays.” In addition to her work on the farm—milking, feeding calves, and spraying—Libby has also held two catering jobs since the age of 14.

Though hard of hearing and wearing hearing aids in both ears since the age of six, Libby has turned this challenge into an asset. “It’s shaped how I connect with people, and I believe it will make me a better journalist,” she reflects. Her passion for storytelling began early through drama and speech competitions, which led her to pursue a career in journalism. Now, Libby is particularly interested in broadcast journalism and reporting, eager to explore these areas further as she continues her studies.

The Fergusson Fund Media Scholarship—offering $10,000 in financial support and a three-week work placement at the Taranaki Daily News—will further help her achieve her academic and career goals. “I am incredibly grateful to be awarded this scholarship,” Libby says. “It will ease the financial pressure and allow me to focus more on my studies. I’m also excited to gain practical experience in journalism.”

Theresa Cayley, Community Engagement Manager at Taranaki Foundation, commented on the high calibre of applicants, adding, “Libby is an incredibly deserving recipient, and we’re thrilled to support her as she continues her journey in journalism.”

Matt Rilkoff, Editor of Taranaki Daily News, praised Libby’s enthusiasm and drive: “Libby’s passion and determination are evident. Journalism is not just about skills; it’s about the attitude to make things happen. We’re confident Libby will do just that.”

We congratulate Libby on receiving the Fergusson Fund Media Scholarship and look forward to following her continued success as she embarks on her promising career in journalism.
