What is the Bashford-Nicholls Trust Fund?

A long-standing agricultural education trust built on the legacies of South Taranaki farmers Claude William Nicholls and James Dawson Bashford. Born in 1880 and living just five kilometres apart, both men left their farms to benefit future generations. For more than 60 years, their legacy has supported agricultural and veterinary learning, innovation, and leadership across Taranaki.

The trust’s purpose remains unchanged. Scholarships and grants continue to be administered by the Bashford-Nicholls trustees through Bishop’s Action Foundation. What’s new is that the trust’s $14 million is now invested and managed locally by Taranaki Foundation and Craigs Investment Partners. This is the largest single transfer of trust assets in New Zealand’s community foundation network. The funds have come home to the region they serve.

After 20 years of stewardship, Bishop’s Action Foundation wanted to enhance the profile of this significant regional legacy and continue to make sure the trust’s capital was invested well for the long term. Taranaki Foundation brings dedicated investment expertise and local management through Craigs Investment Partners, freeing the trustees to focus entirely on scholarships, innovation, and the students they serve.

Who manages the annual scholarships and grants?

Scholarships and research awards continue to be administered by the Bashford-Nicholls trustees through the Bishop’s Action Foundation.
Around $300,000 each year is distributed to support vocational training, undergraduate and postgraduate study, and agricultural and veterinary and environmental innovation.
